Resistance… Ever felt it? Ever felt like not talking when someone asks you how you are, or when people try to ‘help’ when you have a problem. Ever experienced it with others when offering help or advice?

Resistance is quite a common thing, people often feel it when a bit overloaded, or stressed out, in a clinic setting ‘Resistance’ is a psychoanalytical term indicating when clients may try to oppose taking part in the treatment by refusing to change, think or remember or even discuss the problems that they have.

Within Solution Focused Hypnotherapy although we do not actively try and discuss past problems, we may experience resistance especially in the first part of the session where we ask, “What’s been good in your week?” and other questions such as the one we call the Miracle Question.

As you can see, it is perfectly normal to feel like this at times, especially if under stress or feeling low or angry.
I help all my clients to understand why I am asking this type of question so that they understand my intentions – which are of course always to get them firing in the correct part of their brain, so that they can start creating solutions for the problems that they have or are experiencing. It is so important to allow that understanding so that you don’t feel like blocking my good intentions.

So it’s always worth remembering if you feel that a loved one or a friend or colleague is resisting when you offer up help or advice – that the person might have a lot going on that you are not aware of… Likewise if you are the one being a tad guarded; remember too that often peoples intentions come from a place of love (especially if they are your parents!) so don’t take it to heart or allow it to ruin your day… Have a logical thought instead – from whichever side you are on!
